What Is Medicare?

Understanding Medicare and Your Coverage Options

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, as well as some younger individuals with disabilities or certain conditions.

The ABC's of Medicare

Medicare is divided into four parts:

  • Part A – Hospital coverage

  • Part B – Doctor visits and outpatient care

  • Part C (Medicare Advantage) – All-in-one plans offered by private insurers

  • Part D – Prescription drug coverage

We help you understand what each part covers and which options are best for your health and budget.

Medicare Enrollment Periods Know When to Enroll

Timing is everything when it comes to Medicare. Enrolling during the right period ensures you avoid late penalties and get the coverage you need.

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

Who It’s For?

People turning 65
You can sign up for Medicare during a 7-month window:

  • Starts 3 months before the month you turn 65

  • Includes your birthday month

  • Ends 3 months after your birthday month

✅ Enroll on time to avoid penalties and get full coverage.

General Enrollment Period (GEP)

When: January 1 – March 31
If you missed your Initial Enrollment, this is your chance to enroll in Part A and/or Part B.
📌 Coverage begins July 1, and late penalties may apply.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

When: October 15 – December 7
During this time, you can:

  • Join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan

  • Add, switch, or drop a Part D prescription plan

✅ Changes take effect on January 1 of the next year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period

When: January 1 – March 31
Only for people already enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan.

You can:

  • Switch to another Medicare Advantage plan

  • Go back to Original Medicare and enroll in a Part D plan

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if:

  • You lose employer coverage
